THE SHORT VERSION
Learn emoji shortcodes, one guess at a time.
Emoji Trainer is a free browser game for learning GitHub-style emoji aliases. An emoji shortcode is a text alias wrapped in colons, such as  for π. GitHub, Slack, and other apps can turn supported shortcodes into emoji; available names vary by app.
How do I play?
Type a shortcode for the emoji, such as  for π or :scream_cat: for π, then press Enter or Check. Each correct answer earns one point. A wrong answer reveals the accepted names and costs one of your five lives. Your score is recorded when you run out of lives. Restarting or changing level begins a new, unrecorded game.
What changes between difficulty levels?
Easy starts with smileys and emotion, with about 60% of the letters revealed. Medium adds people and body (40% hints); Hard adds animals, nature, food, and drink (20%); Expert adds travel, activities, and objects (10%). Impossible adds symbols and removes hints entirely.
Are these Unicode emoji names?
This game uses aliases from GitHub's open-source gemoji dataset, not official Unicode CLDR short names. Many aliases also work in Slack, but support varies by app. For example, GitHub's  is called βgrinning face with smiling eyesβ in Unicode CLDR.
Where is my progress saved?
Your best score and completed-game count for each level are stored locally in this browser, not on a server. They do not sync between devices and can be removed by clearing site data. If browser storage is blocked, you can still play, but new scores will only last for the current page session.
